The Tree House Books Bookstore is stocked with new and lightly used books. We specialize in children’s books and African-American literature. We offer books at affordable prices to encourage reading. Our bookstore also offers a place for neighbors to learn and interact creatively.

  • Bookstore hours:
    Tuesday-Friday 10:00-5:00
    Saturday 11:00-4:00
  • Tutoring Time: provides homework support and academic assistance to school- age children. Once homework is completed, the children have free choice reading or can participate in the project for the day, which might be an art activity, knitting, or playing Scrabble or chess.
  • Tutoring Time hours:
    Tuesday-Friday 3:00-5:00, during the school year
  • Magazine Project: is producing and publishing a local “magazine” written and designed by and for neighborhood residents. We hold a weekly workshop, which hosts guest artists and provides an opportunity for children, teens, and adults to create projects together.
  • Magazine workshop hours:
    Every Wednesday, 5:30-7:00
  • Junior Volunteer Staff program: this program empowers our young adult members to use their reading, writing, and creative skills to assist younger children in the local community. After successfully completing an application and interview process, junior staff members are mentored and trained as leaders. The minimum age for applicants is sixth grade.
  • Tree Shade Summer Program: provides summer activities for school-age children for nine weeks during the summer. The program is broken down into three 3-week units, each of which introduces and prepares the children for an excursion in the city--to a local museum, historic ice cream parlor, or performance event. The staff supports literacy with art projects, guest speakers, and performances developed by the children.
  • ChessMates: is our chess club for all ages and any level of experience. Community members come to learn, teach or challenge an archrival. ChessMates takes place the first Saturday of the month (Once a month).
  • Tree House Books Playhouse: showcases performances working with Temple’s Theater department. The Tree House Books Playhouse brings an intimate, flexible, storefront theater to Broad Street and Susquehanna Avenue for use by the bookstore, Temple’s Theater Department, and the neighborhood.
  • Community Events: Tree House Books holds special events every month, such as holiday parties, open microphone readings, writing and art workshops. Contact Tree House for a current list of upcoming events!
