JOB DESCRIPTION

Tree House Books Teaching Artists are multimedia/interdisciplinary artists. An individual capable of using multiple forms of communication to create a theme-appropriate curriculum for our 5-week literacy camp. Our definition of literacy is being able to tell stories about ourselves, and the world around us.

Campers will be exploring identity, but also the assets and needs of their neighborhood. You will work directly with young adults aged 14-18 and youth aged 8-18 to produce a project. The oldest youth in our literacy camp (aged 14-18) will then disseminate information and recreate a similar process to complete a same project with the young campers (aged 4-7) at Tree House Books.

Teaching artists are expected to do the following:

  1. Provide Tree House Books with a 5 week overview of their themed project/process
  2. Sessions must include principles of “human centered design’ and/or “community needs assessment” or “democratic process”
  3. Create 5 separate lesson plans to accompany overview detailing each session with particular attention to materials, so that this is submitted in a timely fashion.
  4. Lessons should be designed according to : http://bit.ly/THBsession
  5. Schedule planning review session with Charlyn Griffith
  6. Review and edit overview and lessons according to review feedback
  7. Submit final document

In addition, we have allies throughout the city that invite us to explore with them, whereby teaching artists will be expected to nurture relationships with those agencies, and partners.

To Apply:

  • Fill out our application and email a resume to charlyn@treehousebooks.org stating your interest and relevant experience.
  • Attend a Group Interview Session
  • Attend a MANDATORY Training Session & Professional Development
    • Upcoming Session: Saturday, August 6th 9:00-3:00pm
  • The following clearances are now required due to new laws. Starting July 1st, 2015 anyone applying to be a volunteer will need a Child Abuse Clearance and a Criminal Background Check, as well as a Fingerprint based Federal FBI Criminal History Check if you have NOT continuously lived in PA for the past 10 years. The cost of the fingerprinting is $25.75.
    • For the Child Abuse Clearance, visit the Child Welfare Portal. Click "Create Individual Account." Follow the steps and send a copy of your clearance when you receive it to charlyn@treehousebooks.org.
    • For the Criminal Background Check, visit the PATCH website and click "New Record Check (Volunteers Only). Once results come through, send a copy of your Certification Form to charlyn@treehousebooks.org
    • If you have lived in PA for 10+ years, complete this Volunteer Affirmation Form and send to charlyn@treehousebooks.org.
    • If an FBI Record Check is required (i.e., you haven't lived in PA for 10+ year)
      • Step 1. Go to www.pa.cogentid.com
      • Step 2. Click on "Department of Human Services."
      •  Step 3. Select "Register Online."
      •  Step 4. You will now be asked to submit payment.
      • Step 5. On the "Reason Fingerprinted" drop-down, select “employment with a significant likelihood of regular contact with children.”
      • Step 6. Once you are registered, you will be sent a registration receipt. Please save this until after you are fingerprinted. 
      • Step 7. Get fingerprinted within 90 days of registering. Choose a fingerprinting location to visit and have the process completed. You will need to bring a valid photo ID, your registration receipt, and registration ID. 
      • Step 8. When the FBI record check is complete, a notification will be sent via mail to your home address. Please give this notification to Charlyn Griffith.
