Tree House books is on a mission to grow and sustain a community of readers, writers, and thinkers.

Tree House Books is a non-profit Giving Library and Literacy Center located in Philadelphia. Founded in 2005, our purpose is twofold: to provide access to books and literacy programs  that promote a lifelong love of reading and writing in the children and families we serve. We support the crucial role families play in creating a literacy-rich environment, and actively work to promote families reading together in the home.

ACCESS TO BOOKS
Providing access to high quality books for the city’s children and families is the heart of what we do.  Children and families in Philadelphia have access to books through our:

Giving Library.  Our donation-based bookstore, now open six days a week so busy families can come together to pick out books!
Visits to the Tree House.  Our newest program, we bring whole-class field trips from local Philadelphia schools and camps for storytime and crafts, and allow them to go ‘shopping’ for books to bring back to family and friends. Every child leaves with a Take-Home Library!

Words-on-Wheels.  Our volunteers deliver books directly to homes during the summer.

In 2017, we launched our Books in Every Home campaign, to ensure that everyone has books in their home.  Since our inception, we have distributed over 106,000 books, with 37,000 in 2017 alone! We aim to increase our book distribution so that by 2020 we are giving away 200,000 books every year to homes throughout Philadelphia.

LITERACY PROGRAMS
Having books available is just the beginning! We promote a lifelong love of reading and writing through our Literacy Program Continuum, supporting readers from their earliest moments through high school and beyond.

After-School and Summer Workshops support students in improving crucial literacy skills and developing a love of reading and writing.

Family Programs offer fun events and activities each month to engage the family and support reading at home.

Read with Me provides new and expecting parents and guardians opportunities to read with the youngest members of our community while sharing ideas and offering support for one another.

Tree House Books has its roots in the belief that literacy – in its many forms – is fundamental to a better quality of life. It is the foundation of a child's success in school and beyond.
